Ryan Frye
drums
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Ryan has been playing the drums since he was 8 years old. Being from a family of musicians, Ryan’s primary mentors were his Father, Randy Frye (guitar player), and his Grandfather, Robert Frye (Drummer). He started playing for various bands throughout high school, and then went on to Music Tech in Minneapolis which, aside from advancing his skills, really taught him, as he put it, “how to communicate with my band-mates, which is essential for drummers… in addition to practice, practice, practice.”
Musicians that Ryan has been influenced by include John Bonham, Travis Barker, Bob Marley, Carter Buford, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Motion City Soundtrack and NOFX. But there is no question the impact his family had on his choice of career. As a matter of fact, when asked what he considers to be his greatest musical achievements thus far, while listing things like moving to NYC, playing all the famous clubs, and performing in a music video, Ryan made special note that perhaps his greatest memory was “sharing the stage with my father before he passed away…”
When asked what Ryan is interested in, aside from playing music, Ryan responded, “When I’m not playing music, I’m listening to it, or going to see other bands…” Besides that, Ryan also likes to skateboard, draw, work on web design, get tattooed, and is very much into motorcycles (he worked at a Harley Davidson in Queens) as well as “old school” cars.
But Ryan is, first and foremost, a musician. As he would say, “
Music is life, and life is Rhythm.”
